A flat knit garment blank comprises a body portion formed of multiple-yarn loops between a pair of selvages having a plurality of loops of a lesser number of yarns than the immediately adjacent loops of the body portion and each formed by a plurality of courses, some having a plurality of double-yarn loops and some having a plurality of single-yarn loops. The stocking blank of Fig. 1 comprises a part 16<1> of double-yarn loops,selvages 14<1> of single-yarn loops, a part 18 of triple-yarn loops and selvages 14<1> of double-yarn loops. To form the single-yarn selvages, a body yarn 20 may be knitted over the entire width of the blank and, therewith, a reinforcing yarn 22 between the inner selvage edges S3,S4; or two body yarns may be fed, the one between outer selvage edge Si and inner selvage edge S4 and the other between outer selvage edge S2 and inner selvage edge S3. In the area F,the yarn 20 is fed over the whole course,the yarn 22 between inner selvage edges S3, S4, a yarn 19 between outer selvage edge Si and the inner edge of the left-hand triple-yarn reinforcement and a yarn 21 between outer selvage edge S2 and the inner edge of the right-hand triple-yarn reinforcement. In the area G, only one of the yarns 19, 21 will be used. When seaming the blank, the whole of the selvages may be gathered into the seam; or only part may be so gathered, to leave areas of diaphanous appearance. The fabric may be used for the manufacture of sweaters, bathing suits, dresses and other articles of knitted apparel.
