To set the knots of a net made from threads of or containing synthetic thermoplastic material, the net, whilst maintained under tension, is continuously conveyed, first through a zone in which it is heated to setting temperature by hot gases or infra-red radiation and then through a zone in which it is cooled by a cold gas flow. Rollers, including feed rollers 6, 8 and delivery rollers 7, 9, are arranged so that the net 31 is passed freely in one substantially straight path through a heating chamber 1 and past a cold air blower 30, the roller 6 being driven at a peripheral speed less than that at which roller 7 is driven. The rollers 8, 9 are carried on arms 10, 11 pivotable about axes 12, 13 and are pressed against rollers 6, 7, by the pull of the net. As it leaves the feed rollers, the net passes over a roller 35 resiliently pivotable, as indicated by the arror 34, and then under a guide roller 36. The heating means may be controllable in accordance with net material and speed. Means, including spring means for measuring the pressure exerted by the net on the roller 8 or the roller 35, may be provided to control the speed of the rollers 6 and 7 automatically in accordance with net tension. The feed and delivery rollers are driven by electric motors 14, 22 through chain and sprocket reduction trains. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 748, 760.
