Abstract

[Also in Group XI] Multifilamentary thermoplastic yarn is bulked by continuously withdrawing the yarn from a package, optionally with application of real twist, (2-4 turns per inch) passing it through a heating i.e. setting, zone and drawing it through a false-twisting device by feed rollers rotated at a predetermined peripheral speed, winding the yarn on to another package at a peripheral speed less than that of the rollers, and subjecting it to a further heat treatment (as a package or during its approach thereto) the duration and temperature of which is so adjusted as to remove at least some of the internal stresses in the yarn and during which the yarn may be allowed to contract a predetermined amount and set. As shown, Fig. 3, yarn is drawn from a package 12 through a " balloon stabilizer " or tensioner 14 by nip rollers 13, 15, and pulled over the surface of a heater 16 and through a falsetwist tube 17 by nip rollers 18, 19, the peripheral speed of which may be less than that of rollers 13, 15: crimped yarn is permitted a limited contraction as it is wound on a package by roller 1 driven at constant peripheral speed. The package 8, Fig. 1, is supported on arms, as at 2, pivoted on a shaft 7 carried by a support 10. As the size of the package 8 increases, a bell-crank lever 9 resting on one arm 2 pivots arms, as at 3, on shaft 7 so that the position of an electrically heated oven 6 (see Group XI) is adjusted to maintain constant spacing between heaters 4 and the package surface. The temperature(s) of heater 16 and/or oven 6 may be automatically controlled.
