Abstract

941,161. Labelling machines. WILLCOX & GIBBS SEWING MACHINE CO. May 2, 1962 [June 27, 1961], No. 16809/62. Heading B8F. A machine for applying labels to articles such as garments, the labels and/or articles including thermoplastic material, comprises an anvil 11, Fig. 1, having high-frequency electrode means 12 over which an article is disposed, a label magazine 16 having an open bottom for removal of the labels, a co-operating electrode head 14 having suction ports for holding a label thereto and mounted on a pivoted arm 13 which swings between a position in which the head 14 extracts a label from the magazine and a position in which the label is in engagement with the article on the anvil 11 where the electrode head 14 co-operates with the electrode means 12 to cause the thermoplastic material to soften and adhere the label to the article. The electrode 15 in the head 14 may form a bridging electrode for bridging positive and negative H.F. electrodes in the anvil 11. As shown in Fig. 2, the arm 13 is pivoted at 20 and is moved by fluidoperated piston and cylinder means 30, the piston-rod 31 being connected to a rack 32 co-operating with a pinion 33 on the shaft 20. The head 14 is mounted by a pivot 36 on the end of the arm 13 and carries a plate 37 having a cam track 38 co-operating with a fixed follower 39 to cause the head 14 to pivot on the arm 13 during movement thereof and so bring the electrode 15 into co-operating positions with the anvil and label magazine. Other embodiments, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), are described.
