Abstract

941,010. Making dynamo-electric machines. RANCO Inc. June 1, 1962 [July 24, 1961], No. 21187/62. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H2] A method of embedding a thermally responsive probe in an electrical motor winding, comprises the steps of winding turns of wire on to a core, placing a tube supported by a mandrel in the core structure, adding further turns of wire over said tube, with at least one end of said tube extending from between the additional turns, removing the mandrel and inserting the probe into the tube. A motor comprises a housing 11, an end member 11a and a stator core 12 which has a winding slot 12a containing part of the field winding 15. Mounted on the end member 11a is a bellows-operated switch 20 which is electrically connected to the probe 25 by a tube 24. The probe contains an expansible fluid which responds to temperature changes to operate the switch 20. An extension 25a of the probe is connected by a wire 14a to one end of the field winding 15 so that the probe forms a current carrying part of the winding. To embed the probe in the winding a first group of wires 14 is wound into the slot, a thin-walled insulating tube 27 supported on a mandrel 30 is positioned in the slot and the remainder of the winding is added. The finishing operations including varnishing and baking are preferably carried out with the mandrel in position and it is then withdrawn and the probe 25 inserted and connected.
