Abstract

Nitrogenous fibres such as wool or polyamide fibres, or fibres of cellulose or cellulose derivatives such as acetyl cellulose, or mixtures of such fibres are dyed by treating them with diketene and then with a diazonium salt capable of coupling. The diketene is preferably applied in an inert solvent such as benzene, containing pyridine as a catalyst, and reaction between the diketene and the fibre is said to take place. The diazonium salt may be that of p-toluidine, p-nitraniline or benzidine. Treatment with the diketene solution is preferably effected at the boil and the fibres are preferably washed with benzene, methanol and water prior to immersion in a solution of the diazonium salt.
