Abstract

940,949. Sewing. NOBELT Ltd. May 21,1962 [July 13, 1961; Feb. 28, 1962], Nos. 25478/61 and 7797/62. Heading D1G. A sewing machine in which a cover strip or sheath and one or more rubber strips are fed to the needles, for attachment to a garment, by means of a feed roller and a presser arm, is provided with means for engaging and disengaging the feed roller, means for holding the rubber strip or strips immobile when the feed roller is disengaged, and means for applying tension to the rubber strip or strips at the time of starting to secure the rubber strip or strips and cover strip to the garment. A strip 3 of material, folded over at its edges as at 4 and 5 to enclose a pair of elastic strips 1, 2, is attached to the edge of a workpiece 7, along a portion spaced from the ends of the latter, by four parallel stitched seams 8, 9, 10, 11, the edge of the workpiece being folded inwards as at 6. The cover strip 3 is led to the stitching position by a folding guide 22. The elastic strips 1, 2 pass through normally open clamp jaws 51, 53, through guides 70, 70A, then between a pair of feed rollers 28, 44, and are finally led to the stitching position by guides 23, 24. The edge of workpiece 7 is folded over by a guide 25C carried by a swinging plate 25A. A knee pad 29 is rigid with a pivoted shaft 32 carrying a crank 45 connected by a link 47 to a slidable bar 49 biased by a spring 55 to position its chamfered free end between the jaws 51, 53. A crank 34 on shaft 32 is connected by a chain 35 to a loosely mounted bar 36 which is connected to one end of a slidable rod 39, the other end being pivoted to a lever 41 carrying the idler roller 44 which is biased against the driven roller 28 by a spring acting on rod 39. A crank 56 on shaft 32 is connected by a chain 57 to a crank 58 on a pivoted shaft 59 carrying a pair of upstanding arms 60. A shaft 61, pivoted in the latter, is biased by a spring 62 to engage the free end of an arm 21, rigid with shaft 61, with the upper surface of the work. A cutter bar 25 is movable transversely to the direction of work feed by a lever 27 also coupled to a bar 26 movable to engage arm 21 for pressing the latter against the work. A pin 72 on bar 25 cooperates, on movement of the latter, with a cam surface 71 on plate 25A to swing guide 25C to an inoperative position. A bar 65, rigid with shaft 32, overlies the strips 1, 2 adjacent the entrance to the guides 23, 24. To initiate work, knee pad 29 is moved to a first position in which bar 49 is withdrawn to enable the jaws 51, 53 to close under spring bias, and in which roller 44 is moved away from roller 28, arm 21 remaining in a retracted position. Workpiece 7 is then advanced through the machine by the normal feed dogs, the fold 6 being formed by guide 25C and secured by seam 8, and the seams 9, 10, 11 also being formed. When it is desired to attach the strips 1, 2, 3, kneepad 29 is moved further to a second position in which arm 21 moves forwardly to advance said strips to the stitching points, the free end of arm 21 being serrated to avoid the feed dogs, and arm 65 engages the strips 1 and 2 for applying tension thereto. After a few stitches have been inserted in the strips, the kneepad 29 is released to free strips 1 and 2 from the jaws 51, 53 and from the arm 65, and to re-engage roller 44 with roller 28 to provide positive feed of strips 1 and 2. The strips 1, 2 and 3 are primarily advanced by the machine feed dogs. When it is desired to end attachment of the strips, lever 27 is operated to sever the strips and kneepad 29 is moved to the first position for stitching to continue in the workpiece 7 alone.
