Abstract

A composition comprises 78% to 96.5% of the aromatic or narcotic substances obtained from tea or coffee plants, e.g. from black tea or ground, roasted coffee, and 22% to 35% of a preservative mixture of oxidized tea leaf and tea gum. Preferably 5% to 10% of the whole is tea gum, obtained by boiling or infusing green or black tea with water, filtering, and condensing the liquid. The oxidized tea leaf is made by withering green tea leaves in the open air and completing the drying in a container. Sugar may be added. The compositions may be moulded to tablets, bricks or sticks and sealed in plastic or like packages. The compositions may be used in preparing beverages in the usual way, or used in flavouring confectionery or baking products.
