[Also in Division F2] A machine tool comprises a series of toolspindles 10 in screw-fed operating heads 12, the drive to each screw 11 from an electric motor including an electrically-operated clutch 16. Workpieces are fed between the machining operations. The feed motors run continuously and separate motors are provided for rapid retraction. Thus, the screw 11 is rotated for rapid movement of the head and its co-operating nut 13 is rotated for feed movement by engaging the clutch 16, thus engaging the drive from the spindle motor through a gear 15. By engaging the clutch 16 partially, a variable-speed drive effect may be introduced.
