In a milling machine for cutting helical grooves, an electrically - controlled dividing mechanism comprises a differential D having an input planet wheel 1 driven at a reduced speed from the leadscrew 3 of the machine, an output planet wheel 4 driving the work spindles 7, 8, 9, and a combined motor and brake 10 for driving the carrier 14 of the differential and a dividing disc 17, the disc having concentric circular tracks having elements 18 thereon to actuate a motor-controlling switch 19. The tracks have respectively from two to sixteen pins 18 to give up to sixteen teeth on a workpiece to be milled. The switch 19 is placed in position by a screw 21 in conjunction with an indicator 23. A switch is acted on by a dog on the machine table to initiate an indexing-motion. Dividing may take place while the table is on a return stroke.
