940,442. Patterning mechanism for circular knitting machines. WILDT MELLOR BROMLEY Ltd. Sept. 12, 1960 [Sept. 29, 1959], No. 33023/59. Heading D1C. In a patterning mechanism for circular knitting machines a stack of rotary members 7, having peripheral formations 7d for selective action upon jacks, presses or needles 6 or other machine elements, is continuously rotated by engagement with a key 31 from a common drive shaft 30 driven by pinion 22 from the needle cylinder 2. The members 7 are mounted in pairs on carriers 8 which are individually movable towards and away from the elements, to render the members operative or inoperative respectively, around a fulcrum 9 and between recesses 17a in a post 17 and against the action of a tension spring 13 which normally holds the carriers 8 in an inoperative position. Associated controlling means for moving the carriers may comprise an axially extending series of identical edge cams 12 secured upon a shaft 34 which is racked around intermittently e.g. one or more times per complete revolution of the knitting head, by a toothed rack wheel 35 and pawl 24 slidably mounted in the pinion 22 and acted upon by a cam 26 secured to a rotating component 37 to which the needle cylinder 2 is bolted. A cylindrical control drum with tapped holes to receive screws may be employed in lieu of the cams.
