940,287. Sewing. FRITZ GEGAUF A. G. BERNINA-NAHMASCHINENFABRIK. Jan. 11, 1962 [Jan. 12, 1961; Dec. 13, 1961], No. 1074/62. Heading D1G. A zig-zag stitch sewing-machine comprises a driven control cam member from which the movements resulting in ornamental groups of stitches are automatically derived and a scale driven by the cam drive, the scale being provided with a pattern indicator to permit the operator to ascertain when the last stitch of the pattern has been sewn. The shaft 6 carrying a plurality of cams 11 is connected by reduction gearing 58, 60, 61 to a wheel 26 to which is attached a scale 29 bearing representations 31 of the pattern effected by the cams. The representations are visible through a reading aperture 55 provided with an index mark. In a modification the cam shaft pinion 58 rotates a second shaft provided with an eccentric engaged by a follower provided with a pattern representation which appears in the aperture during each stroke of the follower as it oscillates. The follower may embrace the eccentric or be urged against it by a spring. In a further embodiment the scale 29 is either directly mounted on the shaft 6 or the cam member itself forms the scale. In this embodiment the pattern making comprises a series of numbers corresponding to the number of individual stitches comprising each pattern. Illuminating apparatus. The switch button of a light projects from the cover lid 2a at the end of the machine arm 1.
