A pourable homogeneous aqueous detergent composition comprises, by weight, (a) 7-22%, preferably 15-20%, of an alkali metal C8-15- alkyl mononuclear aryl sulphonate, preferably a sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate, (b) 10-20%, preferably 10-15% of a sodium silicate having a ratio Na2O: SiO2 of 1: 1 to 1: 2.5, preferably 1: 1 to 1: 2, and (c) 5-12% of a hydrotropic non-detergent alkali metal organic sulphate or sulphonate, e.g. a C1-6-alkyl sulphate or C1-3- alkylaryl sulphonate, sodium or potassium xylene or toluene sulphonates being preferred. The composition suitably also includes (d) 0.25-5%, preferably 0.25-4%, of a C2-3- saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol, (e) 2- 10%, preferably 3-6%, of a C8-18-fatty acyl alkanolamide having 2 or 3 carbon atoms in each alkanol group present, and which may, if desired, be condensed with 1 or 2 molar proportions of ethylene oxide, and (f) 2-10% of an alkali metal C8-13-alkyl phenoxypolyethenoxyethyl sulphate. Sodium sulphate (as impurity), opacifiers e.g. a polystyrene-latex emulsion, perfume, bleach, fluorescent dye, germicide, corrosion or tarnish inhibitors, builders and foaming agents may also be included in the compositions which generally have a pH of at least 11 and a total solids content of up to 52%.
