A coiler for hot metal strip comprises a power-driven central mandrel on which the strip is wound, a set of pressure-loaded wrapping rollers, enveloping the mandrel on the major part of its periphery and retractable into positions where the rollers are out of contact with the strip, a feeding device for directing the strip towards the mandrel, three retractable carriers for the wrapping rollers-a middle carrier and two side carriers, flanking the former-and a reciprocating drive means for moving the middle carrier to and from the mandrel, said drive means being adapted to be moved together with said middle carrier along a diameter of said mandrel, and the two side carriers being linked to said middle carrier and to mechanisms, constraining the two side carriers to swing away from said mandrel upon retraction of the middle carrier and to swing towards said mandrel upon approach of the middle carrier. Hot metal strip from a roller table 22 is fed by pinch rolls 26 down a shoot 24 to a deflecting roller 28 which co-operates with six wrapping rollers 14 to direct the strip about an expandable mandrel 10. The rollers 14 are mounted in pairs on a middle carrier 30 and side carriers 32 and 34 and are moved to or from the mandrel by a single piston unit 36 whose piston-rod 42 is attached by columns 43 to the carrier 30. The side carriers 32, 34 are pivoted at 44 to the carrier 30 and are guided by adjustable linkage means 50 pivoted at 62 to the machine frame. Each pair of rollers 14 is mounted in cradle 70 tiltable about a pivot 74 in its carrier against springs 76 and also displaceable in its carrier radially of the mandrel against a spring 72.
