939,522. Spinning processes; tensioning yarn; bobbins. COURTAULDS Ltd. March 26, 1962 [March 27, 1961], No. 11027/61. Classes 120 (2) and 120 (3). Shrinkable yarn, e.g. doubled yarns spun from a blend of stabilized and high shrinkage polyacrylonitrile staple fibres and in which bulk is to be developed by a liquid treatment, is wound into a package having an open structure on a removable, e.g. collapsible or tapered, former under a yarn tension which progressively decreases, e.g. continuously but not necessarily uniformly, during the winding and may finally approach zero. As shown, yarn 7 drawn from a supply cone 17 is wound by a driving roller 5 and traversing guide (not shown) into a package 4 on a former 1. As the diameter of package 4 increases, the resultant pivotal movement of supporting arms 2, in the direction of arrow A, causes a rider 9 to move a link 10 and shift a rod 11, in the direction of arrow B, so that a pin 12 moves one half 13 of a tensioning gate 13, 14, and thereby adjusts the relative disposition of hooks 15 and 16 to reduce the restraint on the yarn passing therebetween.
