Abstract
939,307. Road vehicle undercarriages. H. J. HUDSON. Aug. 17, 1962 [May 30, 1962], No. 20766/62. Class 108(2). In a vehicle, which may or may not be articulated, having tandem rear axles, means are provided for raising the foremost rear axle clear of the ground. If both axles are driven, the raised axle may continue to be driven whilst the vehicle is in motion, unless a differential gear is provided between the axles in which case the raised wheels may be locked by brakes or by a differential lock. The raising means may be a pneumatic cylinder operated through a manually controlled valve in a branch from the braking circuit and a warning lamp may indicate that the forward axle has been raised. In Fig. 1, the wheel axles are supported by springs 3 and 4 having pivotal connections at their ends to the chassis and to a beam 5 pivotally supported by the chassis, the forward end of the beam 5 being connected to an air cylinder 7 so that, by pivoting the beam, the forward wheels may be raised from the ground. The invention is described in relation to other types of tandem axle suspension.
