Abstract

939,088. Containers for cigarettes. PHILIP MORRIS Inc. July 25, 1961 [July 27, 1960], No. 26860/61. Class 18. [Also in Group V] A container for cigarettes comprises a seamless rectangular body part 10 and a lid 11 formed by deep drawing of thermoplastics material, the side walls of the body having a height in excess of two inches, the smaller inside dimension being no more than one inch, the side walls being embossed and having an average thickenss prior to embossing of less than 0À012 of an inch and the container having a total weight less than 4À5grm. The preferred material is a polystyrene which incorporates a rubber compound and a pigment and which may also be coated with a moisture-proofing compound. The lid 11 may be detachable or as at Figs. 1, 4, formed with one half 23 heat sealed or otherwise adhesively secured to a band 20 inset at 21 and with the other half 22 hingeable about grooves 30 and 31 (not shown) by flexure of the lid material. Initially the packing is sealed by a strip 12 and slits 33a which allow tearing of the lid, sides 24 on opening, are, when provided, covered by the strip. As an alternative to the slits deep scores 33 may be provided. Fig. 3 shows the packing with lid partly opened. The portion 26 may be either a depression or a ridge to facilitate opening, protuberances 27, 28 coact to releasably hold the lid closed and a cut-away portion 25 allows easier access to the cigarettes. The sides of the lid flex outwardly on opening as at 24b. Other embodiments describes modifications of the lid 11.
