A tanning-developed image in a gelatino silver halide stripping material is pressed on to a receiving surface such as an etchable plate or cylinder and the support of the material is wetted with a mixture containing a solvent for the support and a less-volatile non-solvent, the mixture is allowed partially to evaporate and the support is stripped off. Unhardened gelatin may then be removed and the receiving surface etched to form a printing plate. It is explained that the support changes in consistency during the partial evaporation and can be stripped easily. A proportion of swelling agent in the mixture avoids the risk that the support will become again adhered to the gelatin. Specification 835,170 and U.S.A. Specification 2,650,878 are referred to.
