Abstract
938,615. Impregnating and calendering paper. M. HEBBELINCK. Jan. 8, 1960 [Jan. 9, 1959; Dec. 16, 1959], No. 718/60. Class 96. A flexible, hardened, bitumenized, felt paper having a high resistance to indentation, is made by first impregnating the felt paper with a mixture of soft bitumen and a hardener, and then subjecting the impregnated and hardened felt paper to a calendering operation. The hardener may be rosin pitch, a coumarone resin, an asphaltic pyrobitumen or a solid hard natural bitumen, and reduces the tendency of the cold bitumen to flow without unduly affecting its viscosity at high temperature. The impregnated and hardened paper may be humidified by standing it in an atmosphere of high humidity before calendering or by applying water and a wetting agent and then standing it in an atmosphere of high humidity, or reeling and storing it. The impregnated and hardened paper may be coated, or may have a surface decoration applied by coating or by means of an adhesive before calendering; the calendering operation may serve also to fix the decorative film. The products may be used as floor coverings. Calenders for the calendering step may be of conventional types having two cylinders, a plurality of cylinders, or a travelling metal band tensioned round a cylinder, or of the type shown. In this, the web 11 is pressed between the cylinder 5 and the travelling metal band 6<SP>1</SP> by pistons of small cylinders 12, 13, 14 and 15, giving repeated maxima of pressure.
