938,523. Differential gearing. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Jan. 30, 1962 [Feb. 4, 1961], No. 3493/62. Class 80 (2). In a limited-slip bevel differential for the transfer gearing of a vehicle four-wheel drive the sun pinions 16, 17 are of different sizes for transmitting unequal torques through the outputs 18, 19, and mechanism is incorporated for automatically increasing within limits the resistance to relative movement if the shafts 18, 19 rotate at different speeds. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the mechanism includes a displacement pump of the type in which balls 25 are mounted in bores 24 in communication with sinusoidal displacement cells 22, increasing throttling of the liquid occurring as the slip increases. In the modification according to Fig. 2, friction discs 28, 29 are mounted between the pinions 16, 17 and the end walls of the differential casing, the discs being pressed into engagement by the tooth pressure between the pinions 16, 17 and the planets 15 when slip occurs. In a further arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pinions 16, 17 are formed with conical friction surfaces engaging complementary surfaces on rings secured to the differential casing.
