Abstract

1333878 Clutches; differential gearing GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 23 Feb 1972 [2 March 1971] 5847/71 Headings F2C and F2D [Also in Division B7] A coupling combination combined with differential gearing between front and rear wheels of a four-wheel drive vehicle, comprises a viscous shear coupling 13 in parallel with a slip clutch 45, 46 between driving shaft 10 and casing 11, the slip clutch being engaged (or, in an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6, not shown, a further viscous coupling adjusted) when the torque transmitted by the coupling 13 exceeds a predetermined value, A torque responsive coupling comprising caged rollers 37 between cam recesses 35 (see Fig. 2) of the rotor 18 of the coupling 13 and a spring (40) biased plate 39 fast with the slip clutch presser plate 43, splined to the shaft 10, causes engagement of the slip clutch 45, 46 when rollers 37 move up the cams 35 to move plate 43 on the torque being transmitted through the torque responsive coupling (caused by drag in coupling 13) exceeding the predetermined value. In the case of a second viscous coupling being used instead of slip clutch 45, 46, the plates of this coupling are moved closer together to increase its torque transmission. Differential gearing.-Fig. 4 illustrates the differential gearing incorporating the abovedescribed clutch combination (designated 60), the output shaft 62, from a gear-box, driving the planet carrier 66 of the epicyclic differential 61, the annulus gear 71 (meshed with planet gears 68) driving both the output shaft 75 to the rear wheels and the casing 11 of Fig. 1, the shaft 10 driving the front wheels via chain 88 and shaft 85 and being driven by the sun gear 69. On slip of one set of wheels the device of Fig. 1 permits continued torque transmission to the other set.
