Abstract
1,252,753. Differential gearing. HARRY FERGUSON RESEARCH Ltd. 14 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 9020/68. Heading F2D. A motor-vehicle interaxle limited-slip three element spur-type differential gear is locked by a torque-responsive viscous coupling 20 connected between any two of the differential elements to resist relative rotation therebetween whenever the output torque on one or other output shaft 15 or 16 vanishes, viz. when one wheel loses traction. As shown, pinions of a planet carrier 11, splined to an input shaft 17, mesh between sun and ring gears 12, 13 of the output shafts 16, 15 respectively, the viscous coupling 20 comprising coaxial collars 24, 25, splined at 27, 28 between the planet carrier 11 and an extension 14 of the ring gear 13, and axially spaced end walls 22, 23 retained by circlips 26 on the collars 24, 25 to form an annular chamber 21, each collar carrying rotor vanes 29 interleaved with the vanes of the other collar and separated by spacers 30, the chamber 21 being filled with a viscous liquid such as silicone fluid or un-cured rubber in mineral oil (other viscous liquid examples are also given). In modifications, the vanes may be replaced by discs having radial corrugations and rotors having gear tooth projections, or, by a positive displacement pump operative with the viscous liquid to resist differential movement.
