In a process for treating molten ferrous metal with the production of slag and fumes the amount of fumes is reduced by injecting liquid carbon dioxide into the clear vapour layer formed immediately above the slag and below the fume cloud. Liquid carbon dioxide is supplied to feeding nozzles, which may be water-cooled lances.
