Abstract

937,420. Direction finders. M. G. G. ARCHIBALD. Sept. 22, 1961 [Sept. 5, 1960], No. 30542/60. Class 40 (7). Radio direction-finding apparatus for direct use on a chart, comprises a ruler 3, Fig. 4, provided with a locating pin 5 in line with its ruling edge 4 and coupled to a directional aerial 1, for rotation therewith relative to the chart, about the pin. In use, the north of the chart 7 is aligned with the actual north and the pin 5 is stuck in the chart at the location of the beacon which is being received. The aerial and ruler are rotated about the pin to detect a null point and a position line is drawn along the ruling edge. This procedure is repeated with two more beacons to produce a " cocked hat " fix. The aerial may be mounted for rotation externally of the chart room and be connected to the ruler by means of a flexible tube coupling (Fig. 5, not shown). In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, the aerial 30 is free to rotate relative to the ruler and is provided on its mounting with a pointer 32 moving over a scale formed on a protractor extension to the ruler and marked 0 to 360 degrees in an anticlockwise direction. In use the north of the chart is aligned with the axis of the vessel and the aerial is turned to detect a null point. Keeping the aerial still, the ruler and protractor are rotated until the pointer 32 indicates the vessel's heading on the scale. A position line is then drawn along the edge of the ruler. Alternatively the protractor may be mounted on the aerial with the graduations running clockwise, and with the pointer on the ruler.
