Abstract
1476068 Navigational apparatus R C KING 13 Jan 1976 [12 Feb 1975 17 Oct 1975] 5864/75 Heading G1F An instrument suitable for taking bearings and horizontal angles comprises a body having edge portions 3-6 which are adjustable for placing against a support or supports, e.g. windows of a vessel wheelhouse, so that the instrument when so placed is in a fixed predetermined orientation with respect to the supports. The housing comprises two spaced parallel plates, 1, 2 pivotally mounting four triangular edge portions 3-6 of hard rubber and having corrugated edges 7; the edge portions can be fixed in a chosen position by tightening screws 9, 10 and nuts 11. As shown in Fig. 1, the portions 3, 4 are positioned so that when placed against either of two windows, represented by chain lines 26, the instrument has an orientation, defined by a line through a centre boss 12 and a fixed mark 20, parallel to the vessel's heading. The centre boss carries a rotatable annulus 21 with a scale 22 which is set to the heading of the vessel as observed e.g. by the steering compass, the direction of any deviation cord compensation being noted by a pointer 24. The centre boss also carries three rotatable sights 27, 28, 29 which are alignable with a fixed central sight 30; the sight 27 carries a ring 33 with a scale 34, while the sights 28, 29 move independently of the ring 33, so that in use, with the sight 27 set to a central object and the sights 28, 29 to objects on either side, the angles between the central object and the side objects are indicated. The ring 33 is adapted to carry a cylindrical body (43), Fig. 5 (not shown) on which is mounted a radio direction finding aerial (47) for use instead of, but in a similar manner to, the sights 27-29. A handle (14), Fig. 4 (not shown) may be adjustably attached to a part 13; the handle may include a cruciform member (42) which may be seated in a complementary aperture in the vessel to align the instrument with the vessel. The instrument has a floatation chamber (17) Fig. 2 (not shown).
