Abstract

1,119,425. Navigational instruments. H.L. HICKS. April 20, 1967. No. 18173/67. Heading G1F. A course plotting instrument comprises a flat, circular course-distance member 1 and a flat, annular course-bearing member 11, the two members being mounted together for relative rotation. The instrument is used in conjunction with a chart 19 on which is marked the rhumb line 26 of the course to be sailed by a boat starting at 25. Guide lines 23 are provided on the chart and the rhumb line is calibrated with equispaced distance units 28. The member 11 is calibrated in degrees and a slot 4 in which a chart marking pencil may be inserted is provided in the member 1. To plot a course, an aperture 7 of the member 1 is placed over the starting point 25 and the slot 4, calibrated with distance units 6, is aligned with the required bearing on the member 11. The course is then plotted on the chart through the slot 4 with a radial line 2, indicating the direction to be sailed, aligned parallel with the lines 23.
