Abstract

936,897. Brake cylinders. G. D. PETERS & CO. Ltd. Aug. 13, 1962 [Oct. 13, 1961], No. 36772/61. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] The diaphragm piston 1 of a railway vacuum brake cylinder and piston assembly is connected to the piston-rod 2 by means of a tapered member 3 threadably engaging the rod and disposed in a complementary tapered bore 6 in the piston hub so as to be locked against rotational movement during screwing or unscrewing of the rod and released by longitudinal movement to allow free rotational movement of the assembled member and rod to permit alignment of the rod with the brake rigging. As shown, the member 3 consists of a stud provided with a threaded extension 4 which screws in a blind threaded bore in the rod end. Alternatively, a tapered nut in the piston bore 6 engages with a threaded end portion of the rod. A resilient 0-ring 7 provides vacuum sealing between the stud 3 and the piston bore and a circlip 9 limits the movement of the stud relative to the piston. In its lowermost position the piston rests against a shoulder 13 on the inturned end of the cylinder wall.
