Abstract

936,728. Lathe details. V. A. PHELPS, M. F. READ, and F. E. READ. March 25, 1960 [March 25, 1959], No. 10629/60. Class 83 (3). A method of providing a smooth surface on a tube of soft rubber comprises mounting the tube on a wooden, plastic, or aluminium mandrel, and turning it with a diamond tool. The turned tube is then mounted on a second mandrel and gaskets are parted off from the tube. Tube T is turned by roughing and finishing tools 22, 21 having diamond tips 24, Figs. 1, 6, and the cuttings are removed by a vacuum tube 23. The tube T is then rotated in a lathe, Fig. 13, is grooved by a tool 29, and the gaskets are parted off by a tool 30, Figs. 9 and 10. Tube T is rotated by a belt 39 driven by an electric motor 36, lead screw 27 is rotated periodically to index the tools along the work by an hydraulically actuated rack 48, gears 49, 51, 52, and two one-way clutches 53, 54, and the tools are reciprocated towards and away from the work by an hydraulic piston 43. Movement of rack 48 is limited by a fixed stop 56, and an adjustable stop 55, and inward movement of the slide 28 carrying the tools is limited by a replaceable spacer carried by piston 43, or the position of cylinder 41 may be adjusted.
