Abstract
936,689. Vapour traps for vacuum apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 16, 1962 [May 16, 1961], No. 17819/61. Class 71. A vapour trap comprises a tubular container 1, for a coolant, located within a duct 2 to define an outer annular space 6 which is closed or restricted at one end and an inner axial space 11 with thermally conducting baffles 14 which extend from the container partly across the axial space. The stainless steel container is filled with liquid nitrogen through a heat choke 8 and annular space 6 is closed at its upper end by bellows 7. Apertures 4, 5 are connected respectively to a vapour diffusion pump and an evacuated chamber. A spider 13 supports rod 12 and D-shaped baffles 14, e.g. of stainless steel or copper. Vapour diffusing into space 6 is blocked by bellows 7 and also tends to impinge upon and condense upon the baffles. In another embodiment the bellows are replaced by coaxial cylindrical sleeves attached to the upper end of duct 2 and container 1, the sleeves being spaced by a narrow annular channel which provides a tortuous path for the vapour.
