A surgical or obstetrical bed or table has a platform 14 comprising two telescopic parts 16, 17 mounted on a base 11 to pivot about a transverse axis 19 between the ends of the platform, the axis 19 being so positioned that, in use, the head end 17 is heavier than the foot end 16 and/or means are provided to urge the head end downwardly, and hydraulic means are provided which are operable to pivot the platform around the axis 19 in the direction to raise the head end 17 and to maintain the platform in a chosen attitude, the hydraulic means being releasable to allow the head end 17 to drop and control means are also provided for the hydraulic means. The hydraulic means comprise a ram 13 having a piston-rod 21 pivotally attached at 23 to the head end 17 of the platform. Two vertical supports 12 pivotally support the platform 14 at 19. The ram 13 is pivotally mounted at 28 on a cradle 26 on a cradle 26 on the base 11. The control mechanism of the ram 13 is actuated by two pedals 30, 31. The pedal 30 operates a pump 32 whereby the hydraulic pressure is increased. A release valve 34 (Fig. 4) is provided to release the hydraulic pressure and this is operated by upward pressure on a pedal 31. Springs 33 spring load the head end 17 of the platform downwardly to assist the downward movement, The platform may be locked against pivotal movement. The foot end 16 of the platform is slidably retractable to be housed beneath the head end 17.
