936,227. Lifts; extensible tower cranes. A.C.E. MACHINERY Ltd. Nov. 7, 1960 [Nov. 16, 1959], No. 38786/59. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4). In a lift for use on building sites comprising a tower formed of superimposed braced sections 1 and enclosing the lift cage 6 and hoisting ropes 7, to avoid re-reeving the hoisting ropes when further sections 1 are added to the tower, surplus rope is stored on the top of the cage by spools 18, Fig. 5, the four ropes 7 being led to their spools by sets of pulleys 19, 20. The cage is guided by rubber tyred wheels 17 running on square-section guides 15. Landing gate frames 3 are fixed into the face of the tower, adjustable bracing members 4 being provided. Locking devices for cage and shaft gates.-At each landing, the landing gate is locked closed by the engagement of a pivoted locking arm 22 in a notch in a bolt 23 on the gate, and the gate is released when a ramp 24 on the cage engages the arm 22, the movement of the arm being limited by a stop 28. When the arm 22 engages this stop, further movement of the cage causes the ramp 24 to move on links 25 against a resident loading, thereby rotating a locking- arm 26 to release a locking-bolt 27 on the cage gate. Cranes.-A jib crane 29 may be mounted on the top of the tower during erection of the tower, the jib being luffable into a substantially vertical position so that the tower can be extended round the crane. The crane is raised to the top of a tower section which has been erected around it by an hydraulic ram acting between the base 33 of the crane and a follower beam, Fig. 8 (not shown). The crane is guided during its vertical movement by rollers 35 engaging the guides 15.
