Abstract
Polyester fibres are coloured by applying thereto dyestuff of formula <FORM:0936223/IV(a)/1> where X is a benzene or naphthalene nucleus in which the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups are in ortho position with respect to one another. The nuclei A and B may be substituted by alkyl or alkoxy groups. The dyes are applied by the usual methods i.e. by dyeing under superatmospheric pressure or at atmospheric pressure in the presence of a carrier or by using a printing paste and thermofixing. The dyes give red and blue shades. The preparation of the following dyes is described: (1) 4-aminoazobenzene---> salicyclic acid; (2) 4-aminoazoben--> 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid; (3) 4-amino -2,31-dimethylazobenzene-->2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid; (4) 4-amino-3,6,41-trimethoxy-azobenzene or 4-amino-3, 6-diethoxy-41-methoxy-azobenzene-->2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid. In examples dyestuff (2) is used to dye polyethylene terephthalate fibres from an aqueous dispersion heated to 130 DEG C. under pressure and a mixture of dyes (2) and (3) is pasted with sodium methylene dinaphthylene disulphonate, betaethoxyethanol, sodium chlorate, a thickener and water printed on a polyethylene terephthalate fabric and steamed under pressure.
