Abstract
936,144. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Jan. 1, 1960 [Jan. 7, 1959], No. 574/59. Class 103 (1). A disc brake has an expanding mechanism positioned between a thrust member and a pad assembly, the thrust member being supported on a non-rotatable housing by a pair of screwthreaded members which are rotated by a spring to advance the thrust member toward the disc. The housing 4 supports a fixed and a slidable pad 5 on either side of an axially slidable disc 1, the slidable pad being detachably secured to a guide plate 6 mounted in guides 7 in housing 4, Fig. 2. A lever 8 abuts pad 6 and has recesses complementary with recesses in a thrust member 9 spring-loaded against balls 10 in the recesses. Rotation of lever 8 causes pad 5 to engage and move disc 1 against the fixed pad, and a member 11 bolted to housing 4 retracts the movable pad 5 a predetermined distance on brake release. The automatic adjuster comprises a screw 12 secured to member 9 and passing through a block 13 secured to or integral with the housing 4. A nut 14 has teeth 15 engaging a rack 16 biased by a spring 17 to rotate the nut 14 and move screw 12 and member 9 toward the disc, a leaf spring, Fig. 3 (not shown), biases the rack against the teeth which are such as to permit movement of the rack 16 to retention spring 17 without rotating nut 14. As wear takes place, on brake release, the rack 17 rotates nut 15 to take up slack between member 6, 8, 9, the spring 17 being of insufficient strength to deflect member 11. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the brake-applying linkage includes a lost-motion connection with the rack 16 to retension the spring 17 at every brake application. A torsion spring anchored to an elongated nut and to a cover fixed to housing 4 is used in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), to move the screw 12. Specification 883,417 is referred to.
