Abstract

Polymerizing unsaturated organic compounds using as catalyst a multi-metallated hetero organic compound containing one or more of oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus. Specified monomers are ethylene, butadienestyrene, ethylene-vinylidene chloride, butadienedivinyl benzene and ethylene-isoprene. Specified materials which when multi-metallated form catalysts are those having ether linkages between the aryl groups, the aryl and alkyl groups, or between the alkyl groups therein including cyclic ethers; particular examples include benzofuran, phenoxathiin and dibenzothiophene. Modifying polar compounds, Friedel-Crafts compounds and carrier compounds which may also be pigments may be present while the polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a preformed polymer. The catalyst residues may be removed by adding dilute or concentrated mineral acids, or organic acids, metal chelating agents or alkalis followed by water washing. Antioxidants and antiozonants may also be present. Specifications 873,656 and 931,136 are referred to.
