Abstract
935,779. Regulating carburetter arrangement. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. April 24, 1962 [June 22, 1961], No. 22571/61. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(6). In a multi-cylinder engine having at least two carburetters 14, 16, Fig. 1, a valve 30 is provided in the induction manifold 12 between the carburetters to enable mixing of the fuel/air mixtures issuing from the carburetters to be selectively varied, the valve being incapable of isolating the fuel mixtures completely from each other. The butterfly valve 30 has a spindle 36, Fig. 2, carrying member 32, housed in an enlarged section 34 of induction manifold 12, and is actuated by a link 42. At engine speeds below a predetermined figure, valve 30 remains in the position shown in Fig. 2 to permit communication between the two portions of the manifold through restricted opening 44 and restricted openings at the sides and top of the valve member 32. At speeds higher than the predetermined speed, valve member 32 is moved through 90 degrees to permit substantially complete communication between the two portions of the manifold. In apparatus for effecting valve movement the voltage produced by a tacho-generator G, Fig. 4, causes current from battery B to flow to a solenoid S, which operates link 42, through the transistor TR 1 whilst simultaneously a micro-switch MS is closed by the engine throttle pedal. Resistance R 2 and diode D prevent damage to the transistor TR 2 by reverse current from the solenoid when the current is switched off. In a modification, an engine driven centrifugal switch closes at a predetermined speed to allow a battery to energise a link-operating solenoid or in the circuit of Fig. 4 the micro-switch MS can be omitted and the solenoid S actuated solely by the voltage produced by the tacho-generator. In an alternative arrangement valve 30 may be operated by a mechanical linkage from the engine throttle control member or from an engine driven mechanical governor. In further alternative arrangements valve 30 is actuated by a hydraulic piston or by the vacuum existing in a carburetter.
