Abstract

A tooth paste comprises the combination of a water-soluble aluminium salt, a polishing agent and a binding agent which are stable to acid and added water-soluble acid in an amount such that 10 grams of the tooth paste require at least 10.2 c.c. of 0.1N sodium hydroxide solution to bring the tooth paste to pH 7.0. Sufficient aluminium salt such as the sulphate, chloride, fluoride or nitrate may be used to bring the content of water soluble combined aluminium in the tooth paste up to 0.01 to 0.2%. Specified polishing agents are calcium sulphate, hydrated alumina and china clay. The binder may be Guar gum, hydroxyethyl cellulose and acid stable carragheenic acid derivatives. The water-soluble acid is preferably a mineral acid such as sulphuric hydrochloric or nitric acid. The pH of the tooth paste is usually not more than 3.2 and is most frequently between 2 and 3.
