Abstract

935,668. Seats. T. REID. Aug. 10, 1962 [May 10, 1961], No. 16983/61. Class 52 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A seat construction comprises a mounting 1, 2, a seat frame 10, 11, a back-rest 22 and twopart pivot means having one part 17 on the seat frame and the other part 20 on the backrest, the part 17 being slidably engaged for longitudinal movement on the mounting. Tubular members 1, 2 of the mounting are supported on a member 3 which -is secured to the floor of a vehicle by metal straps 4, 5. As shown in Fig. 3, the mounting may be tilted. Cross-bars 6, 9 connect the rear and front ends respectively of the members 1, 2. Side members 7, 8 connect the support 3 to the cross-bar 6. The seat frame members 10, 11 each have a rod 14a slidable within the respective tubular members 1, 2 (Fig. 4). One part of the pivot means is formed by a web 15, 16 welded to each of the frame members 10, 11 and having a lower portion 17 which is part circular to partially embrace the tubular member 1, 2 to form a slide bearing for the seat frame on the mounting. The rear ends of the members 10, 11 are coupled by a cross-bar 18. Each web 15, 16 carries a pivot 19 on which is rotatably mounted a segmental plate 20 integrally secured to the backrest 22. Apertures 25 are formed in the plate 20. A pair of spring-loaded plungers 26 are secured in bearings on the cross-bar 18 and are each slidable through an aperture in the web 15, 16 for engagement into any selected one of the apertures 25 to lock the back-rest in a selected position of inclination with respect to the seat frame. A handle 28 is provided to release the two plungers 26. A spring-loaded ball catch co-operates with a second row of apertures in the plate 20 to avoid unintentional dropping of the back-rest. To lock the seat frame in any selected position on the mounting there are provided other spring-loaded plungers 29 mounted slidably on support 30 on the front cross-bar 9 of the mounting 1, 2. These plungers can engage through any selected one of a series of apertures 31 provided in the seat frame members 10, 11. An operating handle 32 is mounted on the member 7 of the mounting 1, 2.
