When the chair of the present invention is in the position illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 it can be used as a litter for carrying an invalid or ill person reclining thereon, said short portion 3 of said long board I at that outer end thereof being formed into a pair of handles I0, I (see Figure 3) and said support members 8, 8 extend outwardly beyond said cross member 9 to form a corresponding and cooperative pair of handles I I, I I at the onposite end (see Figure 7).
Said long element or board I carries, fixedly mounted with respect thereto and one on each side thereof, a pair of circular members I2, I2 at a place near the junctionthereof with first said short element or board 2 and second said short element or board 6, each of which said circular elements I2, I2 carries at its center an outwardly extending bolt I3 on each of which rides a respective thumb-nut I4 and washer I5. Each of said bolts I3, I3 carries a respective strip I6 which extends outwardly beyond the edge of its respec tive circular member I2 at one of its ends and at its other has a slot I! which fits over the respective bolt I3, said thumb-nuts I4, I4 being adapted to press their respective washers I5, I5 against said strips I6, I6 in desired predetermined rotative positions. Each of said strips I6, I6 carries at its outwardly extending end an arm rest I8 which can be set, by means of said thumb-nuts I4, I4, in arm rest relation with respect to the seats defined by each of said long board I, short board 2, and second short board 6 as desired when the chair of the present invention is in an of various positions as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and the height of said arm rests I8 can be adjusted by moving said strips I6, I6 longitudinally on said bolts I 3, I3 as permitted by the sides of said slots I1, I I.
While no specific values have been recited above for the angles at which said short portion 3, short element or board 2 and second short element or board 6 are disposed with respect to one another and no specific or proportional or relative dimensions ar given for said short portion 3, short board or element 2 and second short element or board 6 it is considered that the above recited description taken with the drawings to which reference has been made above and which form part of this application is suificient to enable a, carpenter or anyone of similar skill to construct the chair of the present invention.
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A chair adapted to be used in various relative positions of the elements thereof with respect to a supporting fioor on which it rests, including a substantially upright position, a reclining position and an elongated seat and litter position, and
comprising a relatively long, medial element, one relatively short portion of which is adapted to serve as a floor engaging support member both in said upright position and in said reclining position and in the elongated seat position is adapted to serve as a litter handle at that end and a longer portion adapted at one face to serve as a back rest in said upright position and adapted at its opposite face to serve as a back rest in said reclining position, and in said elongated seat position is adapted at said opposite face to serve as a long seat; a, relatively short element attached to said relatively long, medial element at said one face and at a location between said relatively short portion and said longer portion and adapted in said upright position to serve as a seat and in both said reclining position and in said elongated seat position to serve as a floor engaging support member, in said reclining position in cooperation with said short portion; a second relativel short element attached to said relatively long, medial element at said opposite face and at a location between said relatively short portion and said longer portion and adapted in said reclining position to serve as a seat, in said elongated seat position to serve as a back rest and in said upright position to serve as a floor engaging support member in cooperation with said short portion; and a third relatively short element, attached to said longer portion of said relatively long, medial element near the outer end thereof and adapted to extend outwardly from said one face thereof to serve in cooperation with first said short element as a floor engaging support element; said second short element forming an angle with said longer portion greater than the angle formed by first said short element and said longer portion.
2. The chair of claim 1 and in which first said relatively short element is shorter than said second short element.
3. The chair of claim 1 and in which said third short element defines a shade substantially above first said short element when said chair is in said substantially upright position.
4. The chair of claim 1 and in which said third short element is foldable against said long, medial element.
5. The chair of claim 1 having a pair of arm rests, one on each side of said chair, rotatably adjustable into operative arm rest positions respectively at each of said substantially upright, reclining and elongated seat positions.
