A regeneratively fired Coppee type coke oven battery has a lower part of fireclay brick, an upper part comprising the top part of the roof of fireclay brick and a middle part built of silica brick and set back at the sides towards the longitudinal medium of the battery relative to the upper and lower parts, and independent means for compressing the upper and lower parts and the middle part towards the longitudinal medium from each side. The regenerators 13, up to the 1200-2000‹ F. level, and the upper part 21 of the battery roof are built of fireclay brick, the coking chambers 10 and parting walls 17 and one or two courses of the roof being built of silica brick. The middle part 22 is separated from the upper and lower parts 21, 23 by slip joints 36, 27 formed by paper board, tar paper, finely divided silica sand or heat resisting graphitic lubricant between the parts, and a gas-tight keyed joint, Fig. 5, is formed between the lower and middle parts. Buckstays 41, 42, which may be braced by stiffeners 55, 56 and post 60, have tie-rods 43 with springs 47 compressing the upper part of the battery and anchor bolts 52 and springs 53 compressing the lower part. Bolts 84, 85, Fig. 3, passing through plates 82, 83 secured to the buck-stays and engaging the door frames 74 and the metal armour 72 encasing the end of each heating wall, co-operate with springs 88 to compress the middle part of the battery. The Specification gives suitable compositions for fireclay and silica bricks.
