Abstract

935,084. Coil-winding machines. T. H. PALMER. March 7, 1960 [March 6, 1959; Nov. 10, 1959], Nos. 7794/59 and 38140/59. Class 120 (2). A coil winding machine comprises a rotatable spindle-member for a spool or other coil former, a member for guiding wire &c. on to the spool &c., electric means for relatively reciprocating one of the two members against means biasing them to relatively predetermined positions so as to vary, in accordance with the degree of energization thereof, the relative positions of the two members, and voltage-generating means for energizing the reciprocating means with cyclically variable voltage to cause one member to be reciprocated relatively to the other. In Fig. 1, the guide 35 is fixed and the spool 33 is rotated by a motor 13 and reciprocated by a spindle 10 according to the energization of an actuator 17 against means which bias the spindle so that the spool occupies a central position relatively to the guide. The actuator is energized from a circular potentiometer 25, the arm of which is rotated from the motor 13 by gearing 31, 32. A rheostat 37 is adjusted so that a maximum voltage is supplied to the actuator sufficient to displace the spool a distance equal to half the length of the coil it is desired to wind, an ammeter 38 indicating the length of the coil being wound; the gearing 31, 32 is chosen so that the number of revolutions made by spindle 10 while the potentiometer-arm rotates through half a revolution equals the desired number of turns per layer of coil. In another form, the potentiometer-arm is driven by an electric motor of which the armature is supplied from the armature of a tacho-generator driven by motor 13, the speed of rotation of the contacts being controlled by field-regulators in the circuit between the armatures. In other forms, an auxiliary guide-member 50, Fig. 3, is provided biased to a position in front of the main guide 35 to provide for minor variations, e.g. in the speed of the axial movement of the spindle 10 and in the thickness of the wire; this auxiliary guide is coupled to a member 49 in a transducer 48 in circuit with a reversing- switch 47 operated by a cam 53 in the driving- connection to the arm 30. In Fig. 3, the arm is driven by a variable-speed motor 45 which is controlled by the signals from the transducer; in another form, the arm is driven as in Fig. 1 from the motor 13 which rotates the spool and the signals of the transducer are fed into the amplifier 21 through which the actuator 17 is supplied. In a further form, the actuator has a second winding opposed to that of the first supplied by an amplifier fed from a second potentiometer coupled to the first. In variations, the circular type potentiometer may be replaced by an electronic generator, and to produce special windings, other kinds of potentiometer may be used or the arm, instead of being driven directly by the motor, may be driven by the follower of a cam driven by the motor.
