934,793. Mixing under pressure. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Jan. 28, 1960 [Jan. 30, 1959], No. 3109/60. Class 86. [Also in Group XXXIV In an autoclave or reactor the stirrer 4 is carried on a shaft 3 supported in bearings 7 and driven by a motor 1, both motor and bearings being housed in a chamber 8 containing lubricant and continuous with the cover of the pressure vessel 5. The shaft 3 is sealed by a slide ring seal 18 and has vanes 17 for circulating the lubricant through a heat-exchanger 15. Pressure in the process space and the lubricant chamber is equalized by the floating piston 9. In a modification, the seal 18 is a soft seal and the piston 9 is loaded by a spring 14 to give an excess pressure of ¢-1 atm. in the lubricant chamber, additional lubricant being supplied under pressure to replace loss through the seal 18. The piston 9 may have a tapered groove cooperating with a discharge pipe to limit the rise in pressure. In another embodiment, Fig. II, the upper part of the shaft 3 is hollow and forms the lubricant chamber 8, being supported by bearings 7 on a coaxial stationary shaft 21; an annular floating piston 9 is provided to equalize the pressures as before. A heatexchange medium may be circulated through the channels 25 and the hollow interior 22 of the stationary shaft 21; a replenishment or cooling pipe for the lubricant may also pass through the shaft 21.
