Abstract

934,779. Waveguide Faraday rotators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 10, 1960 [Feb. 16, 1959], No. 5376/59. Class 40 (8). A polarization rotator comprises a ferrite rod 2 positioned in a waveguide formed of a helical coil 3, the gaps between the turns of the coil having an effective path length of one quarter of the guide wavelength, whereby radiation is prevented. The coil may be of channel section (Fig. 2, not shown) or of a hollow section (Fig. 1), in which case a coolant may be circulated through it. The coil of Fig. 3 comprises two strips 11, 12 staggered by half their width and separated by an insulating layer 13. The dimensions of the strips are such that the path length between the inner and outer surfaces of the guide is one quarter-wavelength.
