Abstract
934,616. Waveguide dissipative loads. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 16, 1962, No. 6135/62. Class 40 (8). A dissipative waveguide load comprises a vessel 1 tapered to an apex 4 and having inlet and output conduits 6, 8 at its large end. Lengthwise flow of liquid through the vessel is ensured by a pipe 5 connected to the inlet. Pockets of stagnant liquid near the narrow end of the vessel are avoided by promoting turbulence. To this end, the extremity of the pipe 5 is provided with castellations 7 or with apertures. The pipe and the vessel may be made of fibre glass. The termination is matched to waveguide 2 by means of an inductive iris and tuning screws 12. Extending into the broad side of the waveguide in the vicinity of the apex 4 are two observation tubes (not shown) dimensioned to have a cut-off frequency above the operating frequency. In conjunction with a seal 14 the tubes ensure release of liquid from the system should rupture of the vessel 1 occur. The liquid used may be tap water. The apparatus may be used as an R.F. power meter if thermometers are provided in the conduits.
