934,334. Recognising legible words. DE STAAT DER NEDERLANDEN, TEN DEZE VERTEGENWOORDIGD DOOR DE DIRECTEUR-GENERAAL DER POSTERIJEN, TELEGRAFIE EN TELEFONIE. June 26, 1962 [July 14, 1961], No. 24481/62. Class 106 (1). Complete words forming addresses on mail to be sorted are recognised by detecting vertical strokes in the individual letters so that the word is represented as shown in Fig. 1 by a succession of numbers 0, 1 or 2. To distinguish between the large number of letters having a single vertical stroke the presence of a horizontal bar in the bottom right-hand corner of the character may be detected to provide a further signal. These are indicated by single dots in Fig. 2. Alternatively all horizontal bar or bars may be detected as indicated by the dots in Fig. 3 and characters may be grouped thereby in the eight categories 10-17, Fig. 4.
