Abstract
933,851. Welding by pressure. DEUTSCHE WAGGON-UND MASCHINENFABRIKEN G.m.b.H. Feb. 21, 1962 [Feb. 22, 1961], No. 6748/62. Class 83 (4). A spot welding apparatus, particularly for the welding of railway passenger carriage walls to their frames is capable of longitudinal and lateral movement, has a tonglike welding unit, and is arranged adjacent to a conveyer track which supports the work. As seen in Fig. 1, the work 14 is arranged on a driven roller conveyer divided into two sections 11, 12 with a working gap therebetween on either side of which is arranged an independent welding unit, such as shown in Fig. 2. Spot welding of a given section is achieved by using the longitudinal and lateral welding unit traverses, after which the conveyer drive is actuated to position a further section of the work into the welding area. Traverse drive is by means of hydraulic units 26, 32. Each welding unit comprises a pair of electrodes 36, 37 mounted on tong-like arms 34, 35. The upper electrode 37 is mounted on a rotatable head 38 carried on a piston rod 41 whose piston is located in a cylinder 42 which provides welding pressure. Piston rod 41 extends upwardly through the cylinder 42 and is rotatably driven (for rotating the head 38) by means of bevel gearing 43. The hydraulic drive for traversing the welding heads may be replaced by electrical, mechanical or pneumatic drive systems, the welding unit may be made pivotable about vertical axes, and the entire apparatus may be arranged for welding panels in a vertical position.
