Apparatus for drying clay slip or other liquid suspensions comprises a double-walled cylindrical drum mounted for rotary movement about a horizontal axis and products of combustion for a burner or other heat source are fed into the drum to heat its outer wall, the lower part of the drum circumference passing through a vessel containing the clay slip and the upper part of the drum circumference being enclosed by a hood having an exhaust connection for removing steam arising from the slip as it is dried on the hot drum surface, the dried slip being removed therefrom by scraper blades. Apparatus for drying clay slip comprises a horizontally mounted, double-walled rotary drum 12, Fig. 2, which is internally heated, the lower part of the drum circumference passing through a trough 34 containing the slip and the upper part of the circumference being enclosed by a hood 26 which exhausts moisture and steam through an outlet 33, the dried slip being removed from the drum circumference by an adjustable doctor blade 35. The hot gases from the burner 16, Fig. 1, may be supplied by a fan 18 through one end trunnion 13 either into an inner cavity 21 within the inner wall of the drum having perforations 21 or directly into the annular space 22 between the inner and outer walls of the drum. Surplus hot gases from the drum may be recirculated through the other end trunnion 13a and duct 23 to the fan, and also by a duct 25 into the hood where the gases mingle with fresh air entering the hood under suction at 28 and traverse the outer surface of the drum to assist the drying action, which mixture and steam may thereafter pass through a further passage 32 in the hood together with fresh air entering the hood at 30 to the steam outlet 33.
