Abstract

933,325. Variable speed friction gear; epicyclic gear. O. H. JORGENSEN. May 8, 1961 [May 12, 1960; Oct. 14, 1960], No. 16633/61. Class 80 (2). In a variable speed friction gear, wherein at least one driving obtusely coned friction disc 30 is variably penetrable between at least two driven coaxial, peripherally beaded, axially loaded, fixed-axis friction discs 31, 32, the disc 30 is splined on a shaft 20 geared to a driving (or driven shaft) 14 and journalled in arms 22 of a bell-crank bracket which is swung about a fulcrum on the gear casing, for adjustment of the penetration of the disc 30, by a hand wheelrotated worm 6 meshing a worm-wheel sector 25 integral with or, as shown, bolted to a web 24 of the bracket. As shown, the discs 31, 32 are respectively fixed to and axially movable on a driven shaft 15, the disc 32 being fixed to a housing 34 slidably keyed on the shaft 15 and having pockets for compression springs 36 reacting on an abutment plate 37 fixed on the shaft 15. To avoid tilting under load, the housing 34 is counterbored at 38 to receive, with a sliding fit, a support plate 39 fixed to the shaft 15. In Fig. 11 (not shown), torqueresponsive axial loading of the discs 31, 32 is provided by cam and ball means between the spring abutment plate 37 which is axially slidable on an intermediate shaft 15 and a thrust plate which is axially restrained with respect to the shaft 15 and is gear-tooth coupled to a driven shaft. In Fig. 8 (not shown), the shafts 14, 15 respectively drive a sun-and-planet carrier of an epicyclic sun-ring train, the shaft 15 being hollow to accommodate a shaft keyed to the sun and coupled to the shaft 14, and the gearing between the shaft 14 and the coned disc being such that the sun and carrier rotate in the same direction to provide forward down to zero or reverse output from the epicyclic driven ring. The bracket 24 has stops 40 thereon engaging a fixed stop pin 41 to limit adjustment of the disc 30, and may have an arcuate scale edge 41 graduated in speed ratios and viewable through a window 43 in the casing.
