1,192,404. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. TSENTRALNY ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY AVTOMOBILNY I AVTOMOTORNY INSTITUT. 24 Aug., 1967, No. 39045/67. Heading F2D. A variable-speed epicyclic gear comprises stepped toothed planet pinions each including a pinion incorporating an adjustable interpenetrating friction disc assembly for varying the gear ratio. In the form shown, a sun or ring gear 8 on the driving shaft 7 meshes planet pinions 12 in a carrier secured to the driven shaft 18, each pinion shaft carrying a set of conical friction discs 27 engaging a set of annular discs 24 driving further pinions 22 meshing a ring gear 19 secured to the gear housing. The distance between the axes of the sets of discs 24, 27 is adjusted to vary the gear ratio by rotation of a cage 38 carrying the discs 24 and pinions 22, this being effected by an arm 39. The discs are pressed together by wedge cams B on the planet pinion shafts and loaded by springs 34, Fig. 1 (not shown).
