Abstract
<PICT:0933206/III/1> Chromium-nickel-iron alloy articles, e.g. electrodes for discharge tubes, strip or tape are provided with a black surface of an alloy of aluminium with iron or nickel by applying a coating of aluminium lacquer and then heating in a reducing atmosphere: alloy formation is said to be promoted by the presence of chromium. Chromium-nickel stainless steel strip 1 moves past spraying device 3 where aluminium lacquer 4 is applied to the strip. The strip is heated to 900 DEG -1000 DEG C. in furnace 5, for 5-10 minutes in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen supplied through pipe 6: subsequently strip 1 formed with black alloy 8 is wound on reel 7.
