Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0933152/IV(a)/1> wherein X is a direct bond or a methylene radical and salts and quaternary compounds thereof, and their preparation by treating theophylline with a 3- or 4-pyridine halide or 3- or 4-pyridyl-methyl halide, the halogen atom being chlorine or bromine, and if desired treating the product with an organic or inorganic acid to give a salt or with an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl ester of an organic or inorganic acid to give a quaternary salt. Examples describe the preparation of theophyllines substituted in the 7-position by 3-pyridylmethyl, 4-pyridylmethyl, 4-pyridyl, 3-b -pyridylethyl and 4-g -pyridylpropyl groups and acid addition and quaternary salts thereof.
